Overview of the Game

Sparklite is a cute little action-adventure game that’s presently set to release this November. Developed by Red Blue Games, the title will feature a narrative centered story with procedurally generated worlds. we caught up with the co-owners of Red Blue Games to speak regarding the game and the way they centered on a story in a genre that typically doesn’t enable such a narrow focus.

Sparklite is the game’s heavy specialize in procedurally generated rooms, one huge focus that players will instantly notice. Like a lot of roguelikes out there, the rooms that you visit will typically hold different enemies, secrets, and even paths. this is to help offer a nice bit of replayability to normal roguelikes. However, the game wasn’t designed with the intent for players to place in thousands upon thousands of hours. Instead, the game focuses on a narrative that will push players forward and through the world.

Story

Sparklite is set within the whimsical and dynamic land of Geodia. Battle foes in top-down action using an arsenal of gadgets, guns, and gear. Explore threatening corners of the procedurally generated world, take down titans of the mining industry, and control the power of Sparklite.

Everything within the world of Geodia is tied along by Sparklite. It’s the vital force of the world, and therefore the inhabitants have learned the way to channel it safely. Providing a low-level, rechargeable power source, the blue, glowing ore can be controlled. Or, for those brave or greedy enough, it can be consumed for a surge of power with grave consequences. Geodia’s self-titled “Baron” has devised a plot to mine the world’s Sparklite core to fulfill his own ends. Mining Sparklite in massive quantities, the Baron repurposes the ore to fuel his powerful war machines. However, the pollution from the consumed Sparklite is corrupting the world. Animals have changed into violent monsters, and therefore the surroundings is rotting away.

The stricken land of Geodia contains a natural defense in its Sparklite core. periodically, the core causes an intermission that rearranges the world, setting back the Baron’s efforts. Our heroine, Ada, should stop the Baron before he can get the core and gain the power to make a new world in which he has ultimate power. A plucky mechanic, Ada will need to use her crafty and skills to defeat the Baron’s henchmen across 5 distinct zones. If Ada is to face the Baron and put paid to his deadly plans before it’s too late. Ada will need to work with Geodia’s weird and marvelous inhabitants.

Ada should travel to every zone of the world to shut down the Baron’s Digsites before it’s too late.

Sparklite Trailer

The team isn’t describing the game as a full-blown roguelike. However, the game takes inspiration from recent indie gems with randomized environments, loot collection, and progressive character upgrades. Play sessions are divided into short runs that take place in one in all Geodia’s five contaminated biomes. On a run, Ada will battle mutated wildlife, complete quests for support characters, and gather precious Sparklite. The foremost difference between the game and pure roguelikes is that in Sparklite there’s no lose-everything permadeath.

The two brothers Lucas Rowe and Edward, and their partner Kevin Mabie have spent the last four years developing Sparklite.

“We actually call it ‘permalife,’” Rowe explained. “You never die. You keep all your progress, for the most part. So it really plays more like an RPG than a roguelike.”
“We really liked Rogue Legacy‘s model, where you get to keep some of your progress when you die,” Mabie continued. “You never really feel like you invested a half hour and didn’t get anywhere, like, ‘Oh, I lost the run. I guess I’ll start over.’ People who are turned off by that feeling. We’re hoping this game will appeal to them.”

Sparklite Gameplay

Visually, Sparklite hearkens back to the 16-bit era, with components inspired by each the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. However, with enough modern flair and technique to be clearly beyond anything those classic consoles were ready to accomplish back in their flush. Luckily, the music is a huge additional updated in its style. Mabie described composer Dale North’s work as evocative of the Gamecube era, creating the use of additional versatile tools than were possible back in the day. The tunes are a good bit more advanced than what was possible within the early Nineties, which works well with the “retro plus” aesthetic of the game.

The core loop of the game is definitely Roguelite. Ada goes all the way down to the surface and collects Sparklite shards until she’s inevitably KO’d by one challenge or another. Upon returning to The Refuge, the player can pay their accumulated Sparklite in an effort to create it further throughout their next run. Even with our short time with the game, the sense of player progression was palpable, and that we really felt that Ada had grown more powerful by the end of the demo.

We decided to take the fight to the boss and were promptly stomped to death multiple times after collecting some upgrades and learning the ropes of Sparklite. After multiple tries spent reading the boss and recognizing its patterns and the way to escape its run-ending attacks, we were finally ready to overcome the odds and take down Boris, rescuing our very little robot buddy and ending the demo.

With its robust sense of progression, tough bosses, and large, varied world to explore, Sparklite has the potential to be one of 2019’s sleeper hits.
